Just call me hypercritical

I'm incompatible with everyone, including my best beloved.

Pride and Prejudice - the Jane Austen flicker book. I really shouldn't ever ever watch films of books which I have read and enjoy.

Serenity - a stretched Star Trek episode. Not enough people died - I wanted to see them all squashed like bugs. But I did love the way that the sounds of guns and general mayhem faded away gently and the music swelled up when we had a MEANINGFUL MOMENT. The Shatner character mumbled, but I think that was because he was embarrassed.

I'm going to watch Aliens 3 again, where I can tell one character from another, and no one tries to have a serious discussion about Feelings or Commitment and it kind-of matters (just a bit) when they get deaded. And you should all go and watch History of Violence. Because that is wonderful, and it's a joy to see a film which can let itself start off very very slowly and just build.

General mood : Grumpy, because I've just been reading more rave reviews of Serenity, and feel very alone in the world. I didn't like Lord of the Rings either, so I'm now going to hide myself away from humankind in a cave and gnaw bones.

I hate everything that Joss Whedon has ever written except for Toy Story and that I didn't like nearly as much as I was supposed to, does that help? (I did like Lord of the Rings, but in that uncomplicated "Hey, cool battle scenes!" fashion of someone who hasn't read Tolkien.)

I liked Serenity, but I wouldn't give it a rave review. It had the usual Joss Whedon dialogue (if one likes that sort of thing, which I do although I only got into Buffy some 3-4 years after the rest of the universe) and I love Firefly, but for me the film lost a lot of what makes the show special: the country-bluesy soundtrack and the horses. I hated how LOUD the film was, noise noise noise all the time, and I hate Meaningful Swelling Strings at meaningful moments. I don't think the show is very well suited to the film format, but I did want more Firefly, so I'll take the rough with the smooth.

...but did it do the HK-film thing of turning to B/W, slow motion and repeated from different camera angles? Infernal Affairs, while otherwise enjoyable, particularly suffered from this. Personally, I find that SF on screen mostly doesn't work at all, but then that's because I think that SF literature (especially the short story) is the paradigmatic form of the genre.
